The Magic Number Formula

The Bessemer Magic Number formula is:

Magic Number = (Net New ARR in Current Quarter × 4) ÷ Prior Quarter Sales & Marketing Spend

Breaking down each component:

Net New ARR is the incremental annualized recurring revenue added during the current quarter — new customers acquired minus any churned ARR, plus expansion ARR from upgrades, minus contraction ARR from downgrades. It is a net figure: the actual change in your annualized revenue base during the period, not just new bookings.

The × 4 multiplier annualizes a quarterly ARR figure.
